Law in Action

The Position Paper

Important instructions:

  • Gather at least 4 sources from the databases including a historical background, 2 perspectives on the issue and what places are doing about the issue that are already in place.

  • Use the Position Paper Planning Page as your guide. It will serve as a useful outline for your paper. That’s why I had you create it!

  • Carefully study this sample position paper about block scheduling. Your paper does not need to be exactly like it, but it is a great model for the level of writing I’m expecting.

  • Write with passion and persuasion. This does not need to be a dry, academic essay. With that said…

  • Be sure all your arguments are supported by research-based evidence.

  • Avoid making extreme claims that aren't supported. Doing so just makes your argument weaker.

  • Avoid using first person (I, me, my, etc.) in your writing.

  • Be sure everything is properly paraphrased or quoted. To give credit to your sources…

  • Include parenthetical citations. Ask Mr. Wool  or look it up online if you’re unsure how to do this.

  • The last page of your paper should be a Works Cited Page in MLA format.

  • There is no specific length requirement. Just be sure it is logically organized and includes:

  • An introduction with your Claim Statement (your position on the issue)

  • Two main supporting reasons (your two sub-claims)

  • Detailed, research-based supporting evidence

  • Counterarguments and rebuttals

  • A conclusion that addresses the implications of your position: What larger impact will it have? Why should anyone care about this? What action (call to action) should be taken?
