The Danger of a Single Story or Untold story Research Intro
Class Collaboration/ Topic Brainstorm: Class Collaboration/ Topic Brainstorm: Now that you’ve watched “The danger of a single story”. Identify single stories in your life that you believe are important to disprove. You may choose something local, personal, national, or global. Add your idea to this Padlet(Click here). If the idea you have has already been posted, give it a "like" and try to come up with another idea. The topic you post does not need to be the topic you research.
Research Project Prep: We have been analyzing “The Danger of a Single Story” in preparation for our Research Project that will count for both English and History credit. For this project, you will research a single story and disprove it or discover and tell an untold story. For example, in her Ted Talk, Adiche describes one of the single stories she had as a young child:
“I come from a conventional middle-class Nigerian family, and so we had, as was the norm, live-in domestic help who would often from nearby rural villages. So the year I turned eight, we got a new houseboy. His name was Fide. The only thing my mother told us about him was that his family was very poor. And when I didn't finish my dinner, my mother would say, finish your food, don't you know people like Fide's family have nothing? So I felt enormous pity for Fide's family.
But one Saturday, we went to his village to visit, and his mother showed us a beautifully patterned basket, made of dyed raffia, that his brother had made. I was startled. All I had heard about them was how poor they were, so that it had become impossible for me to see them as anything else but poor. “
