Assignment

AP Language and Composition/Ms. Georgantas

Argumentative Research Paper:

For this paper you start with an authentic research question.  After researching your question and drawing information from various sources, you will formulate a position.  Once you formulate a position about the topic, use a variety of sources to support your argument.   Your paper must take a position (make an assertion and prove it with evidence)  It cannot be expository or simply informative. Those sources include:

  • A non-fiction book that addresses your issue

  • Documentary film or film source… pbs documentary or youtube short documentary,  (you may use the one assigned with your non-fiction book)

  • Non-text Source (Art, cartoon, graph, advertisement)

  • Essay

  • Journals, magazine or newspaper articles

  • Other (speeches, interviews, lectures, oral presentation podcast, performance, literary piece, broadcast TV or radio, conference)

*You must use 3 of the sources above.  After that, you can use your own sources. You can have 5-7 sources but no more than 10.

The Topic:  The best place to start is with your non-fiction book.  What research questions does the book raise?  Would you like to focus on that question in a local, national or global context? If you are stuck coming up with a topic, look through the following NYT argumentative writing topics.   NYT Writing Topics.  They are broken up by category.  The choice of topic is ultimately yours.
