History of Black Chicago Tour
Introduction
Your culminating project for the quarter will consist of you creating a narrated tour of a piece of Black Chicago. The tour will answer a historical question that you create and research and will then be recorded as a video on TikTok, YouTube, or similar. You can view a sample TikTok video about Rogers Park by Chicago historian Sherman “Dilla” Thomas here.
Instructions
Step One: decide if you would like to work individually or in a team of up to 4 peers.
Step Two: develop a historical question about Black Chicago that you would like to investigate.
Step Three: begin researching your question. Be sure to check out multiple primary and secondary sources. Be sure to save your research. Place your links along with notes in a Google doc for quick access.
Step Four: start writing your script. Consider what sources and images fit best with your script. Read your script aloud. Rehearse and practice it before you begin recording.
Step Five: record your final narrative and conduct any edits needed.
Components of your project
Historical question–what historical question or questions does your tour answer?
Must focus on/highlight a historically Black community in Chicago. Do we permit students to go beyond a neighborhood–say to let them explore a genre of art, music, science, business, etc. and show change over time?
Research #of sources/type and quality of sources?
Creation of a narrated virtual tour of their chosen neighborhood (can be done using a variety of mediums)
Criteria for Success/Scoring Guide
Tour incorporated multiple visual aids (images, video clips, etc.)
