Argumentative Research Paper:  

For this paper you start with an authentic research question.  After researching your question and drawing information from various sources, you will formulate a position.  Once you formulate a position about the topic, use a variety of sources to support your argument.   Your paper must take a position (make an assertion and prove it with evidence)  It cannot be expository or simply informative. Those sources include:

  • A non-fiction book that addresses your issue

  • Documentary film or film sourceā€¦ pbs documentary or youtube short documentary,  (you may use the one assigned with your non-fiction book)

  • Non-text Source (Art, cartoon, graph, advertisement) 

  • Essay

  • Journals, magazine or newspaper articles

  • Other (speeches, interviews, lectures, oral presentation podcast, performance, literary piece, broadcast TV or radio, conference)

*You must use 3 of the sources above.  After that, you can use your own sources. You can have 5-7 sources but no more than 10. 


 

The Topic:  The best place to start is with your non-fiction book.  What research questions does the book raise?  Would you like to focus on that question in a local, national or global context? If you are stuck coming up with a topic, look through the following NYT argumentative writing topics.   NYT Writing Topics.  They are broken up by category.  The choice of topic is ultimately yours.    

Goal A well developed argument that presents a clear defensible thesis, convincingly defends that thesis and provides an action step to carry out the argument in real time.

Objectives

  • Generate authentic research questions

  • Evaluate and synthesize multiple sources

  • Develop an argumentative position

  • Use a mode of development appropriate to your thesis 

  • Provoke thought that moves beyond the obvious

  • Incorporate source material to support and argument

  • Explore multiple perspectives to enhance and strengthen argument

  • Address the counterargument

  • Use a strategy of development that makes sense with your argument

Criteria

  • 5-7 pages, double-spaced, not including the title page and works cited.  (12 point Times New Roman)

  • Title page and annotated works cited containing 5-7 sources

  • Proper MLA citation of sources within the paper.  All sources must be used.

  • MLA style documentation.  Questions about citation:  Purdue Owl MLA citation

  • Important:  Library Guide and Links to Sources

  • Presentation. Your informal presentation will explain the process of doing this paper from Presentation questions

  • Annotated Works cited using all of the sources above.  You may have additional sources beyond those but no more than 10 total sources
